There would be no sense of pride in winning trophies that way. It defeats the fundamental principles of competition. And that is what football is - it's sport, it's competition - and professional football is further codified by a system that allows the trading of players.

That trading system fits into the competitive nature of the sport because to navigate it successfully requires skill and judgement. Chucking money at it requires neither of those.
