The Guardian reckons 2% of people don't produce smelly sweat and therefore wearing deoderant makes no difference.

Body odour is caused by bacteria feeding on the sweat and breaking it down which releases a cocktail of various smelly and non-smelly gases.

You could do a lot better than reading the Guardian, M.

which actually says

"If a newspaper headline asks "have scientists found the gene for x?", chances are the article underneath could be replaced with the word "no". But a single gene variation possessed by about 2% of people in the UK means they don't produce the secretions in their underarms that attract smelly bacteria. Research from colleagues of mine in Bristol suggests that despite this, most of these sweet-smelling people still use deodorant even though they don't need to, wasting money and potentially exposing themselves to unnecessary chemicals."

I'd rather everyone wore it, just to be on the safe side. There are few things I can stand less than standing next to a victim of BO on a warm summer's day on the tube :-(

Still, a spray of eau de something never hurts.

It's how it interacts with bacteria on your skin
