Benedict resigns as Pope, but he is of course still a cardinal.

Normally, the conclave voting for a new pope only does so when the previous holder of the post has gone to join the big boss upstairs. This means that the cardinals, all being regular men, even if religious and learned ones, get to cast their votes over a succession of rounds, until the white smoke goes up.

But this time, one of the cardinals voting will be the former pope, who at least for a little while and in respect of some matters, was considered infallible.

Does he remain infallible? In which case how can anyone else cast a vote and fell right about it? And what happens if he's on the losing side of the final vote?

Talk about the curse of being given the chairman's backing...
