For those who apply cognitive dissonance, when there is a discrepancy between beliefs (there should be no inequality in the world) and behaviours (I impose inequality on others), something must change in order to eliminate or reduce the dissonance. In this instance, that something is the token gesture of allowing gays to marry.

It makes us feel better, a sugar rush to our brittle bourgeois sensibilities, but what does it count for? So some benders can tie the knot. Big fúckin' deal.
