...Why do you need to hide your disapproval behind various 'what ifs"?

Of course, a same sex couple can perfectly well create a strong family unit, but who's to say a bigamist couldn't either?

Unless you think we are all innately predisposed to only wanting to be romantically committed to one person?

You're implying something that is demonstrably not true.

(as we see in other countries and cultures, it is far from a rarity) but are denied the option of doing so in a legally binding way. Why are we inviting the gays in, but not the bigamists?

I think a couple that wants to marry but not have kids are considered by society as an alternatieve type of "family unit" that is also to the benefit of society.

to make a baby however hard they try. The most efficient way of procreating the species was to avoid arguments over mates and interbreeding, hence the superiority of one-to-one marriages over polygamy or unrestricted mating. That was what led to the institution of marriage, love was a later addition.

was tangental to my main point, which was to ask those in favour of same sex marriage whether they would also be in favour of bigamy being legalised, and if not, why?

Gay marriage is simply treating gay people as having exactly the same status as straight people - it doesn't change the basis of the marriage contract whatsoever, imo.

Polygamous marriages is changing the one-to-one basis of marriage to one-to-many - a very different proposition. Not saying I have an opinion one way or the other - presumably there are studies which would show the impact of this sort of arrangement.
