He made the fatal mistake of realising that Wrighty was slightly past it.

Wenger reached the same opinion, but was smart enough to make sure he was bestest mates with Dein and to bring in Anelka first.

That said, he did get to sign Dennis.

Imagine that.

the only reason he was offered it was because Wenger was not available. The minute Wenger became available, Rioch was sacked. The fact that he had not signed his contract was his own fault.

Bergkamp and Wenger knew how to get the best out of the player.

Rioch must have felt like the bloke who thought he'd won the lottery only to be told his ticket was no longer valid.

He also wanted to sign Jason McAteer and Alan Stubbs for big money (about 9m at the time) and for some unknown reason Dein was slow to complete the deal.

to join, you will not give the existing manager much money to spend. Bergkamp was on the radar long before Rioch joined.

Ah, so now we know why the board are saving their pennies ready for Mourinho, Ancelotti or Klopp to spend in the summer...

Dennis special. But he kept very quiet aftwerwards so I wonder if there was more to it or a nice pay off if he kept quiet.
