Wonder if Wenger can scoop up a veteran LB who is reliable but late in his career and comfortable with being a squad player. Santos has to go, and putting a younger player behind Gibbs only invites a combination of having to learn on the job and that ambitious player being frustrated if he can't break through.

there is a comfort zone in learning the other defenders and focusing on one position, as well as being able to pivot easily to use the sideline as an extra defender. With wingers, it's more about taking on defenders on the dribble and popping in a cross - which lends itself more easily to swapping sides or playing into the middle.
