I know it's early days but Boardwalk Empire is currently beating Sopranos and Wire hands down

Actually I agree with that The Sopranos was (&still is) brilliant television.

While it has reached a quite glorious crescendo in Season 3, it's rise in quality through season 1 and 2 had been quite slow and much of the first two seasons was mediocre at best.

The Wire and The Sopranos on the other hand had a few notable dips on quality, but overall remained steadily in the stratosphere as far as utter brilliance was concerned.
