View Full Version : Bang head Wenger's Transfer Window Platitudes #25

"We have been linked with David Villa but nothing concrete there. We are not on the case," Wenger told reporters when asked about a potential move for the striker.

"We have not contacted West Ham about Diamé."

"We want to make things happen from inside the club. We have the resources to do well."

For a little variation he then introduced the idea that clubs should be limited on the number of players they are allow to buy in the window. A bizarre idea given that he then explained that buying players in the window is a gamble and generally counterproductive in which case why should he be worried about other clubs buying too many players? Surely that would just destabilise the opposition and strengthen stable old Arsenal who would reap the glorious benefits of him doing precisely fúck all during the course of the window...

I just want him to blindly chuck some money at a couple of players. I don't even really care who they are ffs!

That to me sounds like he won't be signing anyone.

in the stultifying way that you do. Yes we are all frustrated at the lack of signings. We don't need you to tell us we should be.

And now he himself has admitted that this squad is looking short of being capable of making the top four

Actually, that isn't what he said even as recently as Wednesday, when he was asked directly if he wanted to sign two players:

“Yes [I still want two signings]. We work very hard on it,” Wenger said. “It is not the number that counts but the quality.

“I don't give you any names. I don’t come out on rumours because it would put [teams] in a bad position. The player as well.

“You have to respect the player has a contract somewhere, is playing and as long as the transfer is not done for anybody it is best not to talk about it because it doesn’t work. He has to continue to play where he is.”

Well, either way, I think the satisfaction felt at the beginning of the season was down to us actually buying well, and buying big name players. I don't know that any of us were in the position to accurately assess whether or not the squad was up to it or not. Just as I guess you could argue that we still don't really know now (Wenger has pulled it out of the bag plenty of times before now, without putting his hand in his pocket, he has every chance of doing it now).

And you do like to bring up the overreaction to a few games of defensive solidity at the start of the season, but the fact is we all had high hopes that Steve Bould would come in and shake things up in a positive manner when he came in - and then we saw three or four matches where the team showed far greater defensive discipline than we were used to. To think it heralded long-term improvement was jumping the gun, yes, but understandable, don't you think? Even Amy Lawrence, who seems to be one of the good ones, wrote an article extolling our new found defensive prowess at the time.

I really dont understand what people's problem is. It's literally just column filler. Why do people take every word from a press conference as some sort of gospel truth?

A very old and dear friend of mine, who used to work in the No 10 Policy Unit under Major believe it or not, put it best when he said "There's only one thing worse than lying to the press and that's telling the truth".

Not Redrag moaning, mind

All true, but the problems start the moment the club attempts to be 'inclusive' and 'open' and share press conferences with the fans live via the website. Exclusive access which fans are actually paying for in most cases. The point when the fans are being lied to is the point where they also have the right to query the Emperor's new threads...

When the new corporate Arsenal start treating fans as consumers, consumers who are to a certain degree being ripped off, then it is no surprise when these same consumers start querying the quality of produce on offer.

Diaby alongside Arteta works for me

You're right about consumers though but people paying for access to press conferences just seems bizarre. It's as if, even though people perennially moan about it, people want to be a consumer.

Personally I feel a bit SW on this, people paying for a press conference feed need to take a good long look at themselves. Let alone the ones paying for a press conference feed, taking it seriously and getting angry about it.

Oh look at me the brilliant Arsene Wenger. Its not fair that clubs can buy players? What the f**k is the senile dithering dinasaur on about. f**king shame he dismissed the link to Shalke.I'd have escorted him to the airport to ensure he gets on the plane and f**ks off out of Arsenal. That day, to whereever he may go, cant come quick enough.

fans and his desire to fulfill their hopes and dreams. And yet he often speaks with utter, utter contempt for them. I mean, he's right to feel that contempt (being as they are the dregs of humanity), but it is inconsistent with the talk of hopes and dreams.

Both Mikel and Terrence Trent are forward thinking players first and foremost, asking them to be some sort of defensive fulcrum is the shortest route to getting the handbrake stuck on imo.

We need a proper south american defensive midfielder, a vidal, a maldonado or a mascherano type.

Monty91

he is just nominally our most defensive midfielder.

People talk as if he's always being by-passed by opponents because he's charging forward. It's rubbish. He's by-passed because he hasn't got enough support. Wilshire has caused us far more defensive problems this season than Arteta.

You pretty much control the whole team from that spot on the pitch, we wouldnt be such a shambles defensively if we had a proper, defensive minded midfielder in there.

I would say if anything he's technically a bit weak to play further forward for us. I can't imagine him contributing to a lot of the interplay we saw on Wednesday.

A designated DM so signing one who is exclusively that doesnt really work.

It is more about whether the blend of the two works and, argusbly, arteta and jack doesnt- arteta and diaby does.

Arguably......
