Why not a 4.5 year deal? What benefit is it to Arsenal to have a shorter deal? We'll have to renogotiate his contract in 18 months, probably with bigger demands. Surely a longer conract
puts the club in a better position.

The only advantage I can see is that if he gets injured we're not committed to paying him for an extra year. Maybe we can't budget for a longer deal.

I doubt one extra year's guaranteed pay is much of an incentive at this stage of his career. I don't think he's expecting to struggle for work by the time he's in his mid 20s.
