View Full Version : I've decided, definitively, that keeping an indoor cat is cruel

Denying them their innate instinct - the freedom to roam outdoors - is nothing short of imprisonment, albeit with benign wardens who give you lots of cuddles. But ultimately, a prisoner who's treated well is still a prisoner.

Unfortunately, I've now discovered FIV cats often live to the same age as healthy cats so I've potentially got another decade of angst-filled days worrying about the little **** :-(

neighbors are deprived songbirds just so you can feel good about your cat's mental well being.

the outside world, if one cannot provide that then its selfish to have one imo

I wouldn't let my cat out on the street even if he didn't have The Aids - but I certainly regret taking him in whilst living somewhere without any self-contained outdoor access.

But I think these cats should ideally be housed somewhere with a garden, and, preferably, someone at home all day for company.

As a dogophobe, walking on Hampstead Heath on a sunday morning is hell with thousands of the buggers charging around out-of-control everywhere.

Cats jump over walls and fences, so if your cat is not allowed to interact freely with the outside world, it's only alternative to your home is to become an ex-cat.

in return for the health and happiness of my cat.

of course not the same as being allowed to roam free, but still a better quality of life than being stuck indoors.

Also, you can take them for walks using a harness which is something I'm considering.

He came from a charity. They told us he had FIV on the day they brought him to our flat.

Many people support such projects without actually getting involved in what they do.

It's also a decent earner for vets too, as you can imagine.
