St Johns Tavern , one of my locals, proved to be very agreeable and civilised. Not crowded and a good meal – bit more than we’d usually spend in a restaurant but the going rate for the night and, as it turned out, live music from a bluesy three-piece with a female singer, boogie-woogie keyboards and laid-back brushy drums.

Only dampener was at the stroke of midnight when some bloke in a tartan skirt and with an unholy bag of pipes suddenly materialised and started unleashing the most horrendous cacophony of screeching and wailing. Strangely, however, the assembled drinkers and diners, who had for the most part been ignoring the excellent live music for the last couple of hours, all leapt to their feet cheering and clapping, and generally seeming to all be having multiple orgasms to the bagpipe experience. I really felt for the band at the this point, who are were actually a bit pissed off that their excellent efforts had been largely ignored, while two minutes of cat-wringing was greeted with ecstasy.

It just goes to show, Brian, that at the end of the day, (or at least the year) middle class, gastro-pub going North Londoners are basically just a clueless bunch of thick cùnts.

I had a lovely time, finished off a series of Boardwalk Empire and got quietly and pleasantly munted

recording of Channel 4 NYE House party and starred at the ceiling for about 3 hours. I don't think i've ever seen a bigger pair of mincers than the two singing with Hercules and Love Affair.

*Waits for Jorge.

Is sit down dining really conducive to appreciating live music?

I showed them a thing or two I tell you. By the time they left for the pub at 9pm a fair few were well merry. I passed out on a chair 24 seconds after the door closed.

sitting down is ok when eating or if the band isn't all that. Dining to the violin player in the (sadly deceased) Trojka in Primrose Hill used to be excellent.

Didn't know they had an upstairs at St Johns Tav tbh.
