The finite overall wage bill means we pay players relatively smaller wages and also that we can't afford to increase the number of players taking a slice of that cake. If we did the size of the slices would be smaller still. If 'our' top players want to be paid the same as their PL peers then they'll go.

You can't have it both ways but I agree that offloading some of the expensive fringe (at best) players would help.

The contract saga stretches back to the beginning of the season just gone. Cole, with three years of his contract to run, was approached by Dein with the intention of securing a new deal as soon as possible. After an impressive campaign from the England left-back and given that his salary was just £28,000 a week - not even a third of what Sol Campbell or Patrick Vieira earned - Dein indicated Arsenal were willing to offer more. Dein offered £35,000 a week but insisted there could be no negotiations. However, negotiations did eventually begin and Barnett and Dein shook hands on a deal which offered Cole £60,000 a week.
