In this instance the mother in question has a history of breakdowns but regularly uses her daughter as an outlet for her anger/emotional hang-ups.

your partner understand that this is not healthy behavior and that to take away her mum's power of provoking involvement and reaction is not the same as ignoring and not caring. Her mum needs support and that's tough to focus on with all the emotional episodes, so she needs to take a step back and say no some times and think about how to help her mum help herself, as her mum is obviously feeling like she needs help and its showing itself in a dramatic way, which is the common way of getting the attention - ****ting on your loved ones.

If it was me I would ask her to talk to her Mum about it. Influence the Mum through the girlfriend without getting involved directly.
