There is atually a logical explanation for why the club may not have started these negotiations earlier. Not one you could prove, but one that at least makes sense.

Ergo, a pay rise. You could re- sign all your players every year but it will hike your wage bill somewhat. Why pay them more when they already under contract?

Of course, the other thing we dont know is whether these players tried to initiate a contract discusion earlier. I have heard rumours that this is why we sold Song, because he was demanding a new one.
