The single biggest issue in this whole affair was phone hacking, which is illegal.

My main problem with the press is the utterly immoral hounding of celebrities and innocent people which does untold damage to people's lives. I don't even know whether stringent regulation could curb that stuff, so basically the status quo it is.

I dont understand how all of the other large, important industries have some form of ombudsman or regulation and the press cant.

It isnt about protecting freedom of speech, the people who own newspapers have enough lawyers to ensure their own freedom of speech
