"It is a massive satisfaction because I am, so many times with my back to the wall, accused of not spending fortunes," Wenger said. "To show that we can do it, with the way we do it, with the club in a good financial situation and with the players coming from our youth development … I think it is important for the game as well. There are many different ways to be successful and I am very happy that our way is one of them."

Measure of success?

Because losing the champions league costs money. Our current approach maximises return over outlay.

We are successful but it is financial success. That drives our footballing 'goals'

Needs must...... http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/smile.gif

also goes hand in hand with finishing third, below the richest club in history and Man Utd.

Curious...

It is argusbly a greater financial achievement than a footballing one. Unfortunately, the two are linked, as everyone chases gold over silver(ware).

Give the carling cup a champions league place and it becomes the holy grail and, in turn, a greater footballing achievement precisely because it becomes more difficult to win.

Nevertheless.....the money is the goal, not the trophy. Lets face it, your definiton of success is financial, mine still rather childishly clings to the notion of success for its own sake.

What can i say, i'm a dreamer......but i'm not the only one http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif

speculate to accumulate (money)?

In other words, if we could keep generating money by discarding entirely of the annoying hassle of trying to compete for trophies, we would?

Not the sort of people whose opinions you would respect, admittedly http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/hehe.gif

We dont genuinely compete for trophies and our transfer activity doesnt show any evidence of a serious attempt to do so. And we have fallen short for 8 years, shorter recently than before.

If we are seriously trying to compete for trophies, is arsene getting it wrong?

Or are we simply redefining the measure of true success, given that trophies are a rather sentimental and childish measure?

in the English game several years ago, effectively making it impossible for us to compete with them without overhauling the entire structure of the way the club is run and acquiring our own sugar daddy?

I don't get it.

It was the idea that the ONLY measure of success was trophies.

You should try supporting one of the 99% of teams that never win anything. Ever.

Clubs dictate this?

Otherwise it is fundamentally irrelevant. We were not talking about our failure to win things. We were discussing whether we seriously aim to do so, rather than just aim for the top four and keep the coin coming in.

Are you saying we have admitted defeat in trying to win something because we cant compete?. Is it pragmatism?

And in a way they are. Trophies that dont pay the bills are, certainly.
