Washington's actually quite nice - most of the tourist bits are in a fairly small area and can e covered quite easily without needing to get on the subway.
The only disapointing bit was the White house - seemd like a white bungalow and you can't get that close to it
The Lincoln memorial on the other hand is awesome - no photo I've seen or taken can capture just how imense it is.
From memory all the monuments etc were free - for some, eg the washington monument,you just have to get there early enough to get one of the free passes.
That said New York is my favourite US city, closely followed by Boston.
