BARCA CHIEF LASHES OUT AT MANCHETER CITY & ARSENAL
Oct 17, 2012
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has taken a firm swipe at Manchester City and Arsenal about their methods of recruitment having seen a number of players head to the Premier League duo.
The Catalan giants have seen a succession of talented young players leave the club after being offered lucrative deals by wealthy foreign clubs, with the most obvious example being Cesc Fabregas, who joined the Gunners as a 16-year-old.
Barcelona, desperate to take Fabregas back to the Camp Nou in 2011, then had to outlay close to 35million to ensure the midfielder returned to the club.
And more recently, Arsenal signed Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral from the famed La Masia Barca academy, which is sure to further anger the Spanish club if they turn out to be top players.
While City have not poached young players in the same way as Arsenal, they did sign commanding midfielder Yaya Toure for 24million in 2010.
And Rosell believes the English champions are now doing at senior level what the Gunners did at youth level by offering exorbitant amounts of money to tempt players away from the club.
Speaking to Marca, Rosell said: "City are now doing at first team what Arsenal have been doing at academy: call players and offer them lots of money."
Rosell also does not believe the proposed idea of a European Super League is a viable option, both for traveling inconveniences and the lack of genuine rivalries.
"A European league won't happen soon,” he added. “National federations won't allow [it], and fans prefer to face Betis rather than Bruges.
