All right Jack? Wilshere cancels day off to close in on his comeback

Arsenal midfielder could return ahead of schedule after doing extra trainings sessions with Emmanuel Frimpong

Jack Wilshere is so desperate to return to first-team action with *Arsenal that he cancelled his day off to put in an extra training session.

The 20-year-old midfielder has not played a competitive match for more than 14 months because of ankle and knee problems.

He has managed two Under-21 *outings for Arsenal in his comeback and boss Arsene Wenger has been delighted with his progress. Wilshere has come through unscathed and is stepping up his efforts to be ready for the first team later this month.

He was due to have Friday off after his efforts. But he and Emmanuel Frimpong, another long-term injury absentee, asked for an additional supervised session instead of a rest.

The planned first-team comeback for Wilshere is the Capital One Cup clash with Reading at The Emirates on Tuesday, October 30.

But if he continues to progress at the same rate, there could be a return ahead of schedule – against either Schalke in the Champions League the previous week, or against QPR in the Premier League on Saturday, October 27.

Wilshere feels so good that he has not ruled out some kind of role in Saturday’s game at Norwich.

But Wenger looks certain to regard that as premature.

He will not want to risk anything going wrong at this stage.
