View Full Version : How reliable are TV ratings?

As far as I understand, they are measured by several thousand households in the UK having their viewing habits recorded via a special box.

How much effort is made to ensure these households accurateley reflect the various demographics of the UK?

I believe each household that takes part receives benefits such as subsidised TV licenses, etc. Which would suggest that lower income households would be more keen to participate than higher.

You get what i'm saying anyway...

This box that some people get - I've never known any or heard of any that got that box.

finance.

But if they offered me half price TV license for having a little box connected to my tv, I'd happily do it.

In fact, you may suggest that 'richer' people are generally more frugal with money so more likely to seek out and implement such a plan as saving some money on their tv license. Being thrifty is part of how they become rich in the first place.

Why not track usage inside every Sky box, anonymize it, and then use that data instead?

but because the sample size is actually relatively small they do get a pretty even spread across all demographics

and as you can see they only have 5,100 homes across the UK.....so all worked out on very low sample sizes!

it be more dodgy for example if they predicted that 60 million people were watching tv which would mean the whole country

The U.S version starts with an interesting premise and goes downhill from there like quite a few U.S shows.

I mean, if they just used Virgin's viewer/recorded content stats for ratings, for instance, surely that would be far, far more rich data than a silly Neilson thing.

If perfunctory, mechanical sex talk from failed Page 3 girls is your thing then you can get stuck for hours on that channel.
