Having been crushed in both '08 and now '12,what lies ahead for the GOP?

2010 expected mid term gains for the GOP and primarily it's Tea Party faction actually proved very beneficial for Obama. It led to TP getting too full of themselves and forcing moderate/electable GOP candidates either off of ballots or to pander to the extreme fringe wishes.

This has been exactly the battlefield Obama wanted.

The TP forced Romney to flip and turn from his moderate leanings in order to get the GP nomination head of Perry/Santorum.

We all know elections aren't won by the bases, they are won by appealing to the middle ground independent voters.

So, what now for the GOP then? I'm sure they realize the TP route isn't viable having been rejected by the electoral masses. There appear to be three options for the TP:

1) break away and form their own entity,
2) slide back into the the GOP,with tail between legs,
3) Nuclear option of carrying on as they've done in the last few years.

2014 should see the Senate back in GOP hands (looks like they've blown that surefire 2012 chance), but 2016 will be a very interesting campaign indeed.
