I knew my surgeon does most pro footballers who have this groin injury that needs surgery so when I was chatting to him, I asked him which Arsenal players he had done recently. He told me he couldn't say cos of patient confidentiality etc, but if I found any pro footballer with the injury in this country in the last few years, he will have done it.

So finally Kieran Gibbs name came up and I remembered that he had had the injury on both sides, so he went into detail and told me how it was dealt with...

When it was first identified the club wanted to rest and physio him back to fitness to avoid surgery. This has a slim chance of success but is possible, maybe you can build the muscle to get him through games to a better point in the season to have surgery, but ultimately surgery is always going to be needed. Eventually they decided surgery was necessary. The surgeon wanted to do both sides at the same time, meaning 5-6 weeks out. But as the left was much worse than the right, the club decided to just have the left done, meaning 4 weeks out and then look at the right side in the summer. So left side was done and he neared the end of the rehab, he had too much pain in his right hand side, so ended up needing that done. So it meant back to the beginning and starting rehab from scratch with another operation.

Basically the club tried every option to try and 'rush' him back, less invasive approach but each decision they made ended up being the wrong choice and ended up costing them months more on getting him back. If they had operated on both sides on day one, it would have been much quicker.
