I had to do a few days placement at Royal Bournemouth hospital last week (night shift) and the public's stupidity knows no bounds.

It's not the lack of intelligence that bothers be, though. It's the lack of desire to gain more knowledge that f**king pisses me off so much.

I just assumed that everyone enjoyed learning new and interesting things. Apparently not.

I was performing a simple procedure to drain some fluid which had got trapped around a man's knee. And we're always told that when the patient is under only a local anesthetic, keep them talking about whatever.

So, we got talking about holidays. Fine. This led to talking about planes, and the gentleman (in barely distinguishable normal English) said 'mazin, init. dem planes. stayin in the air and all that. turrifys me, mate.' I responded with 'well, I think it's really quite comforting, really. You are relying on the laws of physics to keep you in the air, and there aren't as many other things to crash into up there. Not like driving on the roads'.

Anyway, it materialised that he had no idea how a plane stayed in the air (the line that got my blood boiling was 'dunt av a clue ow dey do it, dey just do'). I tried to explain that it was very simple, actually. But he would have none of it. Hadn't even thought that the wings might have something to do with it.

I also had to speak to the wife of a man with bowel cancer who was concerned about the delay that was being experienced in the operation we did on his intestine. I explained that he had very low blood pressure and, as a result, the nurse was having difficulty finding a vein to put a saline drip in.
