team shape.

i watches all 3 games several times this season, i see a new pattern to our play.

1- we defend deeper, which means teams do not get behind as much.

2- we defend deeper because, we've had huge change of personal during the 2 last season, i think 7 of the 11 that started yesterday was not even at the club 13 months ago, while gibbs and mannone never played,

this means we now have a team suited for defending deep, tsller defenders, gibbs, jenkinson, mertseacker.......and more hard working frontline, podolski, ox and giroud compared to arshavin, nasri and RVP

we also attack with pace rather than our usual(from the last 6 years) slow build up, which means we dont get everybody up the pitch to attack, leaving us exposed for counter attack.

we play more like wengers teams used to play, we have completely changed the structure of the team, this explains alot of our new found defensive stability.

cazorla is our begrkamp, not cesc, bergkamp had, henry, pires and freddie making runs for him, cazorla have ox, podolski and giorud making runs for him.

cesc never had runners, he had RVP, arshavin, nasri, rosiscky and helb all wanting ball to feet, that meant slow build up and defenders pushing on, only walcott made runs, which also explains why theo was very important for us previously but not as much now.

there you go

I found it strange watching us compressed, without possession and then suddenly looking dangerous on the break. As you and others (not necessarily here) have said - a bit like the older days.

Somehow though I wasn't entirely comfortable with 49% possession, even if that and 2-0 is better than having 70% and drawing 0-0. I'm used to us usually having the ball then ****ting myself when we lose it, rather than playing in our own third.

I saw a stat saying that we have conceded shots at a similar rate to last year. The difference I expect is that last year the shots would be one-on-one with Voych after the high-line had been torn up again. This year the shots are more speculative.

The pods defensive work and tracking back to cover was awesome- Walcott should be made to watch what the pod was doing in the Liverpool game over and over again.
