View Full Version : Much criticism of our feckless wide play, indicting the Gervester, Feo, etc.

Yet it has gone unnoted by the experts that the overlapping fullbacks have always been the key to the Arsenal's style of play under Wenger and we have been playing with Jenks/Gibbs who a) aren't really first choice at either position and b) while a couple of triers are not yet able to consistently get on the same page with our midfielders and are rather below average crossing the ball.

These first two matches they have focused on their defensive responsibilities, an approach that I endorse. That has come at the expense of more attacking play, so it's not necessarily the shortcomings of our midfield that is solely to blame.

Really the, errrr, problem.

Its the old 'guy who every attack goes through and two of the strikers ahead of him are brand new and have never played together before' problem.

They have never played with any of our full backs either.

It will come, just not yet.

and can congest the middle.

Not that your point isn't correct. Both are factors. It was noticeable at one point how Blenkinsop, having run the ball out of defence and given it to the midfield, immediately checked himself and went back, rather than 'bombing on'.

Several times there was a misunderstanding between Gibbs and the midfielders, i.e. zigged instead of zagged. Gibbs popping up a far post cross instead of cutting it back. Stuff like that.

I think that time will help, as you say, and then our now castigated 'wide' midfielders will suddenly look more dangerous as a result.

Last season Gerve was most effective when using the bombing fullback as a 'foil', playing off of him and frequently racing to the byline then cutting the ball back. These two matches with our FB mainly staying back or withdrawn he was forced to try to take two defenders on, with little success.

I have no idea who Tefal head is. sorry. What is tefal?

Did so on numerous occasions vs Sunderland. It was his final ball that was poor.

Very Glen Helder.

seasons since we last played our first two game of the season and finished with clean sheets.
As you say, great basis of a concrete platform to go on. And Cazorla looks to be just the ticket we need.
