After what looked to be a good start to the transfer window with some intelligent strengthening of the squad, we've sold our captain and a first choice midfielder and lost out to Liverpool on his replacement because we weren't prepared to pay as much as them.
I imagine Walcott will be sold in the next week, the deadwood will all remain and we will go into the season with a subs bench consisting of the likes of Chamakh, Ramsey and occasionally even Squillaci. Still, our net profits will be encouraging again. If you're into that sort of thing. http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/banghead.gif

Better spent elsewhere, especially as he's not really what we need - talented or not.
Fact is, no-one knows the ins and outs of this one, very complicated.

However I would guess your summation of events is a huge simplification of the em, event.
We've been trying to close this for about 2 weeks now, it would be daft to think this was not our plan A for Song's departure. It would suggest however that getting an agreement with Real is proving difficult for whatever reason - you have chose to believe it is financial.
It could as easily be the player who may think a short term move to Anfield is better where he will probably play every week. The two managers have a personal relationship also which could also be an influence on the deal, they will have a mutual trust.
Best for the club to walk away now and still have a week to pursue other targets as opposed to giving up next week and not having time. Remember how excited people were about M'Vila coming in, could happen now.
I will be annoyed if we don't sign somebody as by the fact that he has chased Sahin it shows that Wenger feels we need an extra player in. We have been here before in recent summers.
Of course some will say we're not desperate for a new midfielder after all but it is beyond doubt that Sahin would have improved things, from that perspective it is regrettable.

Thing doesn't mean you're guaranteed to buy him at the end of the loan, he could choose to go back to Real if he wants. The reported £5m loan fee is ridicules, and if he really was on 115k per week we wouldn't have signed him permanently anyway.

My gut tells me we need someone who can sit in like M'Vila, but that's probably a gross oversimplification of how to make us defend better.

And we dont have to think abput this chap that so many of us know so little about.
If arsene wants to strengthen, hehas the time and the money. My guess is we wont sign a midfielder. He has already listed our many options, and he has a point. I think this was a player he genuinely rated. He hasnt got him. This doesnt mean he will just go and buy someone else.
There isnt much point in analysing the summer until the window shuts. At this point, the summer could go either way. It could still end up a good one and it is certsinly notone ofpur worst.
Anyway, no more sahin bull****. Happy days http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/smile.gif

And wages, and a potentially huge transfer fee at the end, maybe arsene felt real were stitching us up. It is bad enough that we spend so much time developing players for bigger clubs but at least we get paid for it. This sounded like us paying real for the privilege.
The phrase 'better spent elsewhere' is a dangerous one. I wouldnt bandy that about. There is good chance thatmoney wont get spent at all.

There are always other players, and plenty of them

Interesting to note that respected national newspapers behaved no better than the now legendary 'bloke on twitter'.
The mail ran a headline several times stating cateogrically that hehad signed. The independent did similar yesterday. Often papers ran stories having him sign at each club on the same day.
Pure bull****.

If Real, as this story suggests, had accepted 2 million it seems ludicrous to then given them 5 as Liverpool have done.

Rightly so if as that article suggests the player wants to return to Madrid after the year.
Pity but there you go. A promotion of sorts for Coquelin is an option as he has always shown to be a player I would suggest. He has done his loan, come back and now needs to play or else he is essentially surplus.
Sahin would be an improvement as I mentioned earlier but I can't get away from the thought that we have an extremely congested midfield of players who will all want to play and have legitimate arguments to do so.

would far rather we were looking at a better keeper than our current back ups, a better defender than Djourou (who can also cover right back) and another striker to supplement Giroud and Podolski.
I fail to get too worked up over missing out on a 1 year player.

And smacks of serious desperation. I like to see the club cough up and show a bit of ambition, but this is chucking money down the bog. Absurd.
I wasnt overly happy with the 2 million.
