For me a Prez has to clearly define the terms of our engagement, our objective, and our exit strategy prior to engagement. It's incumbent to persuade the American people this is a worthy thing to do. In that regard Iraq had all of those elements .. and even then you can see that things go wrong and also it takes a lot more time then you can even imagine.

If it's just lobbing a few cruise missiles into
Damascus then, no.

"If you could have Northern Ireland back, would you really want it?"

Fighting a tyrant, promoting democracy etc. Of course it might be that the opposition is little better than the status quo, and that involvement only distorts the local process of determining their own future - to their ultimate detriment.

What interests me here is whether his political opponents, such as yourself, would be dubious of any high motives he claimed - suspecting that he would just be trying the age-old strategy of unifying a country against a (perceived or real) external enemy.

I take your point that you would judge the case on its merits, but would you trust him to present his case honestly?

Putin is using every opportunity to meddle and control. Lots of signs point towards him being the influence maker.

Automatically thinking that he's pulling something because of the election is shallow.
