Ideally not too expensive as I am paying for 9 people http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/hide.gif
They are friends from abroad on a short stay and something real English would be great
At the moment Queen's Head (Newton, South Cambridge) is top of my list but any other ideas would be much appreciated

Even McD's looks good there...
Few nice places by the river.

with the exception of the uni, everything in Cambridge seems to be part of a chain. I generally go to Loch Fyne there as, though part of a chain, it has a tad of character

Cambridge city centre has a lot of generic chains, most best avoided. If I want to do the "British cuisine" thing for visitors then either of the 2 Chop Houses (http://www.cambscuisine.com/) are good. For myself, current local favourite & also walkable from city centre is The Punter (http://www.thepuntercambridge.com/). If you have a car then the nearby villages have many good country pubs.
Of the ones already menthioned The Eagle is better for a pint (in the courtyard is nice) but the food is so-so.
