Particularly this bit;

"It is understood Van Persie was encouraged by the arrivals of Germany forward Lukas Podolski, France striker Olivier Giroud and Spain midfielder Cazorla - to the point where he was open to the idea of staying with or without a new contract.

But Wenger pulled him aside shortly before Sunday's friendly victory over Cologne, told him he would be sold if a deal could be reached and informed the Dutchman he was no longer part of his plans."

Not really much of choice, especially with his injury record.

Wenger was forced to act and RVP's position had become untenable. Thats the impression I get from the story anyway.

and plan for life after him, then he went on and made that statement, wich led to arsenal negotioationg with teams, nr.10 cant claim he was forced out or that he wanted to stay few days before the season when the whole of preseason was planed with him going. furthermore the article says he wanted to joing united ahead of the other 2, f.ck him

From what Tim Payton and the AST people say, we had reserves of ~40 million before the RvP sale and after having bought Cazorla et al. Based on that it would seem strange if the board forced him to get rid.

All 3 this summer are mid/late 20s and 'proven' to various levels.

Whether this is a conscious change or one now available through greater financial resources, who knows

...it would seem that aiming for a net spend of zero remains an objective, particularly if the Song rumours are true. That is what bothers me the most.

Going into the season with deficiencies in the squad (and there are) whilst having money in the bank, will really be hard to stomach.

His body will fail him by season's end. This is not a RvNistelrooy type signing for Manchester United. RvN was 25 when he signed from PSV Eindhoven and 30 when he left Old Trafford. RvP is already 29 and despite being 8th all-time on the Arsenal score sheet with 132 goals, he only played in 25 or more Premier League matches four times in his 8-year AFC career. Now, then, 2011-12 was unbelievable but in my estimation he will not achieve 37 goals over the next 3 years combined. Good $ell Arsene!

United needed central midfielder but instead we get 24 million from them for a 29 year old. We finish ahead of them
