He should certaintly be grateful, and I'm sure he is, but not to the point that he would sacrifice the final chance of his career to earn a big move.

And in any case, Wenger didn't stick by him through sheer altruism. He did so in the hope that he would eventually perform as he did last season, for the benefit of Arsenal.

in football terms.

His obligation arguably would be to see out his contract, but then if he walks for nothing at the end of it next year, that is far more damaging to the club.

So the follow on argument would be is he morally obliged to sign an extension to his existing contract, because of his previous track record?

it certainly isn't enough to buy someone of his quality. Had he stayed we would have been a hell of a lot stronger. Nice to see so many of our fans are now like the board in so much as we are more interested in "good deals" than winning things!

Doesn't matter if it's Arsenal or Bolton, you have no realistic option but to sell if a player doesn't sign an extension coming up to the final year. The fact they won't sign an extension is enough of an indication the vast majority of times that they have no intention of staying anyway. No you can't replace him like for like for £20 million, but it's still a damn sight better than trying to replace him with a zero starting balance!
