Is all this ‘number 1 ranked’ thing not basically a load of meaningless balls when all is said and done. A bit like sitting on top of the league in October – March, tangibly there is no reward but it’s nice.

Did English cricket cast envious glances at others when they were languishing in a lower position, has it assumed a new found importance on the basis that you are the current incumbents?


It’s nice to win test matches I assume but surely the only real tangible award that matters is the Ashes?

and had had the Australians and Windians and Indians lording it over us that it was nice to take their beloved and meaningless #1 ranking away from them all.

Winning the Ashes in Oz at around the same time was just poetic gravy.

England are far better off without it, of course; the whole point of international sport is beating England at our own game and all these foreigners will just blub and even refuse to play if we start winning all the time.
