£500 is an absolute limit, all in, but I would prefer to spend less than £400 if possible?

Don't know much about hybrids really, but if you go for road, you can get a Boardman Road Race for £550 or so.

...or you can buy mine. Only done about 200 miles on it. Bought in January. I do need to put new tyres on as I have just puntured won yesterday.
You could have it (with new Continental tyres) for £300.

Easier ride in to work, still very quick and much more versatile.

You should get this which handily is £100 off

I'm not ever going off road and not likely to go trekking, it is purely for commuting. How does a hybrid differ from a road bike?

no faffing about with fancy pedals that take ages to get used to, better visibility

etc etc etc

and my mountain bike is a real pain on some of them. I get home and I'm shagged dragging that weight up some of them. Will a hybrid be that much lighter?

I would bet your mountain bike weighs closer to 20. I have a road bike and it weighs 2kg less but that is barely anything - and I much prefer the hybrid for commuting.

When you are riding in the city you need to be able to brake quickly, and that is much harder on a road bike unless you ride about in racing position the whole time which isn't going to happen.

I did used to have a racing bike as a teen, but never really thought about braking and riding position.

And the amount of times you have to emergency stop in the middle of london means my road bike is a bit of a liability..

Had one of the previous models.

Now have a Specialized mountain bike which I use to cycle to work along the Grand Union Canal.

When I was doing jury service I used to cycle along the Thames Path with an old, more rugged hybrid and it was fantastic. Nice to forget that you live in a city every now and then imo
