this was posted on Football365.com by someone talking sense for a change.....wonder if Gazidis posted this????

Contrary to popular belief that transfer fees are numbers plucked out of the sky, there is a very reasoned and logical way to setting acceptable values for players.

A club will value a player at the perceived profit they will earn the club in the remaining period of their contract. So Arsenal believe that Robin Van Persie will make them £20M in the space of one year. That will be projected prize money, ticket sales, merchandise and commercial spin offs that would be garnered if they kept the player, minus his wage. Swansea think Joe Allen would earn them £5M a year after wages, so therefore his value is £15M with him having 3 years left on his contract. Simple really.

The only other factor then is the selling club trying to get the best profit and the buying club trying to get the best value, so the price may be inflated or deflated as a consequence in negotiations. As much as we like to glamorise football, it is not the case that chairman do business like we play a football manager video game. Chairman who do are called Peter Ridsdale.

And surely the anticipated annual profit is 'plucked out of the air' anyway.

in isolation, which obviously it is absolutely not possible to do, the maths described in the post show the management of a club doing a lot of financial analysis merely to work out how to break even on doing a sale rather than how to make as much as they can in profit.

You need to think much more Cash in the Attic and much less The Money Programme about this imo.

just because it is the sensible thing to do....
