How is this any different than losing on purpose in a badminton match to get a better semi final?

Ultimately their goal was to finish in the best position possible ie Gold or Silver in the final.

Really don't get the issue with deliberately losing, perhaps, they should've been smarter with what they were doing and lost a lot more cleverly.

Happens in every sport....the greater the prize the greater the manipulation. The risk / reward trade off makes it a no brainer.

Wonder if anyone will be giving Bolt and Blake any heat when they easy up in the 100m Semis and finish 2nd but still qualify for the final.

Imagine the 100 m though, where an advantage would have been gained from ending last, and everywon in the heat, refused to cross the finish line. That's more like the badminton situation.

Falling deliberately to get a second chance is as close to cheating as one can get without actually cheating. It's bending the rules, and as with everything else in life, it is the rule's intention that should be followed, not the rule's wording.

You're not meant to fall over deliberately you know, just because you had a bad start. The start is an integral part of the race, and you're not supposed to get a second chance.

A cliche I know but surely the format is fault. Why wasn't it a straight knockout competition like the tennis?

If you lose the badminton match you will get an advantage in the next game.

You're not meant to do either deliberately.

You think it's ok what the cyclist did?
