I must admit that I would normally associate hyperbole with excessive positivity rather than negativity, though (as in 'hype'). There ought to be a specific word for excessive and exaggerated negativity.
Nah. It works equally well both ways. 'Exaggeration for effect.' I remember it being described to me thus whilst I was at school.
