    I think they're fine as long as you don't think of them as potatoes - which they emphatically are not.

    Granted, the name 'sweet potato' doesn't really help in this regard.

    Admittedly that is my main objection - and the fact they are offered instead of God's own vegetable in certain fashionable places

    Yes. I've never seen them offered to the exclusion of normal potatoes. That would be an outrage, I agree.
