This is where it gets rather confused.she was asked if she disliked foreign people and immigrants. She replied that she is half Irish, half Jewish and her family came here from the Ukraine and cork after the war. She added that the reporting and officious policing of ridiculous nonsense like this resembled the Stalinist society that her grandparents escaped from.

Yes and no. I don't have a huge problem with the law itself- it is supposed to be used as an aggravating factor in an established crime. It is being used as a crime in itself, which is completely wrong.

British policing has always relied on the common sense of the copper. Your decent copper doesn't nick you for an eighth of hash or for swearing in the street whilst very drunk. He tells you to piss off home, son.

This is where the problem is. The coppers are given targets and at present it is to nail as many hate crimes as they can. You even chief constables openly saying they can't do the job the public wants because they are tied up responding to nuisance hate crime accusations.
