Ah, yes. That. Well clearly he can keep himself in the closet, but not his clothes.

I know more than a few people who voted for Stephen Twigg in 97 on the grounds that, although a poof, he was at least an honest poof.

Poof. You don’t hear that word so much these days. Plenty of bender, Gaylord, even faggot. Poof seems to be considered a little old school.

    Shame….

My dad worked with him, and said he was a damn good bloke. Not something he said about many politicians.

Yes. Poof is actually rather an affectionate term, I think.

Haven't heard 'gaylord' for about 30 years, though.

Gaylord was more a school yard putdown than a comment on men who liked to bum other men.

It was popularised by a character in The Dick Emery Show called Gaylord, who was in fact a young skinhead rather than a poof.

I admire your ability to remember stuff like this. Utterly useless of course but still wd. I remember it now you have pointed me in the direction, otherwise no.

It was quite the putdown in early 80s school as it was one word, pithy and allowed very little scope for comeback other than the rudimentary punch in the face.

An outstanding constituency MP and he took his defeat with such good grace and humility that it really took the shine off it for some people

Yeah. I have one of those brains. Stuff - useful and useless - sticks to it like shít to a blanket.

Mind you, I'm utterly terrible with people's names and am getting worse as I get older. If I'm at a work event and there aren't name badges, I'm almost certain to say something like 'Lovely to meet you' to someone I've met several times before.
