The lyrics just give Plant an excuse to sing. They didn't set out to say anything.

For me the voice is just another instrument. I rarely listen to lyrics. If I notice them, and they're any good then that's a bonus. Not listening to a band purely because the lyrics are not much cop misses the point of music imo.
