Parents who happen to be physicians accidentally giving their 3 year old a drug overdose sounds far more unlikely to me. I think you'd need to be quite cynical to believe their despair was faked and the whole thing was an act.

It was actually my first thought on the sorry business too. Doctors are the coldest-hearted *******s in the world. In fact, they are selected for it. And they know all about how to dispose of bodies.
