Thousands shot by firing squad, a couple of thousand extra-judicial assassinations, sinking boats full of escaping Cubans... actually, one might suggest that making a country so fúcking miserable that great swathes of the population are prepared to risk their lives bobbing around on a raft in the open sea in order to get away is crime enough in itself.
Well there are two relevant points here. Firstly, the pre-Castro regime was utterly corrupt and the large majority of the Cuban people lived in poverty with no chance of education or medical treatment at all. Revolutions don't generally occur when the people are happy. Secondly, I doubt Cuba would be nearly as impoverished were it not for the American sanctions, sanctions which were unjustly imposed in my view.
Plus, as I said, a Latino chap waving a Cohiba around is awfully appealing.
Your first point would perhaps have some relevance, had anyone suggested Batista was the good guy in this scenario, but as they haven't, it doesn't.
I'm sure the sanctions didn't assist Cuba economically, certainly, but then again I would be grateful if you could point me out anywhere that fúcked up socialist economic planning has ever created anything other than misery.

Cuba might have had a good chance, though. You need lots of natural resources, uneducated workers who are happy to be led and access to a large economy in relative proximity. I think Cuba had as good a chance as anyone had it not been for the US sanctions which were applied - let's be honest - because some awfully rich Americans and ex-Cubans were no longer quite so rich.
Well, yes, but it was Castro who decreed that the future lay with selling sugar beet to the Soviets at three times its market value and that no other economic activity was legal. Daft *******.
