What sort of kit, i? Are you counselling a pre- and power amp set up? I'd be interested in any recommendations for such a system.
I would suggest, it depends on what sort of stuff you listen to and on what sort of kit (ie vinyl?) that dictates your set up.
Get yourself down to your local hi-fi independent. They'll happily relieve you of a few grand.

Pre-amp if using vinyl. Don't do that much these days, tbh.
integrated amp, DAC, quality CD player and some kind of digital interconnect for FLAC. 2 good speakers, stereo is all that is required, none of this surround sound nonsense. oh, and good headphones.
Have you tried the little Dragonfly DAC for playing stuff from your Mac/Laptop? Cool...
