A £70,000 salary defines you as rich?

What utter tosh. £70,000 equates to around £4,000 per month, net. Call it £1,000 per week.

Now let's subtract essentials: Cigarettes and booze, £210 per week. Food, £200 per week.

So we're left with £590 per week to pay for motoring expenses, eating out, holidays and staff?

Fúck off. Impossible.

Obviously you can live reasonably comfortably on £70k (assuming you don't have a mortgage, naturally) but 'rich'? Absolute nonsense.

Switch to roll ups, Chief. You'll save a fortune. Asda do a very presentable own brand lager that could save you a couple of bob.

With the whole Brexit deal you are going to run out of foreigners to exploit so you may have to cut back on the staff and do a bit of hoovering yourself.

and if you are on a 70k salary you are going to live in a different way. Therefore you will most likely have a higher mortgage than others as you've perhaps bought a more expensive place and more expensive to run and maintain car.

I switched last year and its fantastic once you find the right tobacco and filters for you.

I buy mine duty free. I smoke like a chimney but I spent 58 quid on tobacco last November and haven't spent a penny since.

One could make the same argument re the military but it would seem a little cold. I think the issues in the NHS tend to be about workload, hours and the strain on the system as much as about pay. I don't think most nurses appreciate how much will be asked of them when they go in.

When I was at school, I am not sure if it's still the same these days but joining the Army was the choice you made if you messed up your exams. Or working in a garage.

for me it's just that if you have a place to live that is paid off you are in a good position in life.

You are obsessed on the whole property thing, in fact on this basis you should really be Irish.

As a person that rented for close to 20 years and has owned for 13 I am still unsure which I prefer. There is obvious long-term benefits to ownership but there is 30 or more years of at times ******* aching expense to get there, and you could very well be dead by then.

Out of curiosity who was it that decided this arbitrary figure of £70k??

It does not seem a lot to me as you have correctly pointed out a few normal outgoings would eat into that quite considerably.

Moving away from the cut and thrust of debate regarding the concepts of rich v wealth, I personally would define being wealthy as being able to live the life one wanted to the very full, and at 70k I am not sure that would always be the case.

I suspect the figure was the output of some scientist of analyst **** with a massively large head, a chap (or female, who knows) who once they stepped out of the safe environs of their office or lab would struggle to find their own arse using both hands.
