Just got back from Kazakhsta and Uzbekistan - Can highly recommend them..

Beautiful architecture on the old silk road and very friendly people. Cheap as chips too..

I saw a couple of episodes of the Silk Road documentary on TV recently; it looked a remarkably fascinating area.

Any issues with booze?

Not where I was...Bars / restaurants quite busy in the evening. Fairly quiet during the day but still open.
