if so... what purpose does the player have who seems to be in a completely different kit colour to the others?

At first i thought it was because she was the most mental-looking one but at a proper guess i'd say she is the designated "keeper". Her role seems to be stop the ball hitting the ground, for wont of a technical term. Maybe she's not allowed inside the line nearest the net?

I have noticed that GB are **** at serving though.
